Midwives have attended women during pregnancy and childbirth for thousands of years. American midwives today can be found in a variety of settings and practices. Many midwives do both well-woman care and attend pregnant and birthing women, while some do just well-woman care, and others work only with pregnant women. They might do just home births, just hospital births, or a combination of the two. They might work independently, or in a midwifery group, or as part of a physician practice.
